Dave Thompson, MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, is delighted to hear that Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers, a charity he nominated for the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) Scottish Charity Awards, is a finalist in the Community Action Category.
The charity, which was set up in 2000, aims to care for children and young adults who are responsible for the care of someone else. These young people, under the age of 18, care, assist and support parents, siblings, grandparents or anybody else who has a disability, impairment or illness. Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers provide support to combat isolation, access skill development and meet young carers’ needs.
The objective of the SCVO Scottish Charity Awards 2012 is to celebrate the vital work of charities, community groups and individuals dedicated to making Scotland a better place to live. There are five categories, and the winner of each will be decided by voting online.
Mr Thompson said, “I nominated Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers because it is a charity which makes a significant difference in Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch.
“Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers is engaged in outstanding work since it was established in 2000. The charity has truly made a difference for youngsters who have the heavy responsibility of caring for a relative. The one to one and group support, the respite outings and advocacy support are crucial in alleviating some of the hardship of being a carer.
“I am delighted that the Charity Awards have recognised the vital role of this charity and I hope to see Skye and Lochalsh Young Carers win the award and continue to make a difference in Skye and Lochalsh.”
