Dave Thompson SNP MSP Skye, Lochaber, and Badenoch is warning members of the Highlands and Islands to not offer any personal information to a group claiming to be the ‘TPS Verification Department.’
About the bogus calls Dave Thompson said: “I’ve received several international calls claiming to be with TPS and I want people to be aware that the calls they are getting from this group are totally bogus and anyone receiving such calls should not give away any personal information.
Telephone Preference Services (TPS) has dealt with similar issues in the past and their website contains a list of several organisations that have been reported by subscribers of the phone service. The website advises against giving out personal information, especially credit card information, which could lead to identity theft.
The TPS website further reminds customers that they are a free service and to not pay any organisation claiming that payment is due for their services. TPS is the only official Opt Out service companies are required to abide by under UK law.
Dave further commented on the calls saying:
“It is important to safeguard our personal information in an age where identity theft is so prevalent.
Organisations like these take advantage of good people and can ruin lives. I urge everyone to be aware of these scams.
Note:
More information about scam calls can be found on the TPS website http://www.tpsonline.org.uk
