Dave Thompson, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch was delighted to join members of the Highland Indian Association as they celebrated Diwali, the Hindu faith’s annual ‘Festival of the Lights’ celebration in Raigmore Community Centre on Saturday evening.
Dave said: “I had a fantastic evening in the company of Dr Reddy and the Highland Indian Association, and thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment throughout the night.
The entertainment comprised of storytelling, traditional Indian Dance, Scottish country dancing and spectacular fireworks.
Diwali is a five day Hindu festival that marks the end of the harvest season. Traditional celebrations involve lighting lamps called diyas, decorating the home with lamps, firework displays and giving gifts to friends and family.
Dave added: “It was great to see the fantastic mixing of cultures on the night, with traditional dance from both India and Scotland on show, and members of the local Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities as well as members of the Indian Association.
“The fireworks in particular were spectacular, a very apt way of celebrating the festival of the lights!
“I thoroughly enjoyed the evening, and look forward to participating in next year’s festivities.”
