Dave Thompson, SNP MSP Skye, Lochaber, and Badenoch highlighted his support for Prostate Cancer UK in their efforts to ensure that men, regardless of where they live in Scotland, get the care and support they need.
Commenting on the charity’s work Dave said: “I am delighted with the commitment and work being done by Prostate Cancer UK.
“Their efforts have led to the development of a set of standards that sets out the quality care and support all men diagnosed with prostate cancer should receive regardless of where they live. Having this level of care everywhere is particularly essential for more rural communities.
The set of standards entitled ‘A Quality Checklist: Your Standards of Care’ was developed after research was undertaken by Prostate Cancer UK. Throughout the research process the charity received input from those most affected by prostate cancer such as those diagnosed with the cancer and their families, as well as healthcare professionals. The input has led to the patient-focussed standards found in the quality checklist and Prostate Cancer UK is calling for them to adopted across Scotland.
Some of these standards include ensuring men have access to appropriate clinical expertise, that men are aware of support and services available to help them cope and that all men should have a face-to-face consultation with a doctor when diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is currently the most common cancer in men, affecting one in every nine men, and it is predicted to be the most common cancer overall by 2030. It is estimated that every year in the UK 10,000 men lose their lives as a result of prostate cancer.
Dave added: “Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and affects both those who are diagnosed and those closest to them.
“Setting a nationwide standard will help provide the support and quality care they deserve.
“Prostate Cancer UK is doing a fantastic job in raising awareness of this disease which is affecting a growing number of men and their families in Scotland.
“The earlier detection and treatment of a cancer has a huge impact on the patients chances of survival, and a quality checklist can help to ensure that everyone is given the best chance if they are diagnosed.
